Is your slow website killing your business? In short, YES!

Think about how you use Google. Are you on the couch at night using your phone or tablet? Or is it during your lunch break at work? Or how about when you're trying to solve a problem? Most of the time, it's when we don't have time, and that impacts our browsing behaviour.

After clicking on a search result in Google, how long do you wait for the website to load? 5 seconds? 10 seconds? Keep that answer in mind...

Now, have you tested how long your business website takes to load? How does that compare with how long you are willing to wait for someone else's site when your time is critical?

I don't know about you, but I'll typically search for a product or service, read the results and their meta descriptions, choosing 3-4 relevant search results to open in new tabs. And I'm not alone, more than 20% of people open multiple search results in a new tab.

Next, I'll go to the first tab, check if the website has loaded and if it's not loaded or looks like it's going to take more than a few seconds, I close the tab and look at the next result.

If the next website is slow, looks outdated or it's not apparent from the content on the page or navigation that the website offers what I'm looking for, I'll close the tab and check the next result. I repeat this process until I find a website that has loaded, looks reputable, and it's obvious they have what I need.

My time is precious; I don't have time to sit around waiting for a website to render large and insignificant images. I don't have time to read through pages and pages of information or dig through multiple levels of navigation to find what I want. I don't have time to waste on trying to work with companies that give an impression of being outdated or unprofessional.

I don't have time. I have a neglected family, a limited social life, a messy office, a car in need of a wash, dogs that would like more walks, a BAZILLION other, more important things I could/should do instead of waiting for a website to load.

Am I alone? No.

Research has shown, website speed (loading time or page speed) is a MAJOR factor in people leaving a website. If your website is taking more than 4 seconds to load, you're losing 25% of your traffic, straight away. It edges up towards 50% around 10 seconds.

In our mind, we're already making judgement calls about why this company/product/service isn't what we need based on this online experience.

How good is the user experience on your website? If your website takes more than 3-5 seconds to load, you're, at best, annoying potential customers and most definitely losing business.
